The Last Mambabatok

“While I’m Here | The Legacy Project” comes straight from the heart of Director Brent Foster and team at Foster Visuals. The series of short films tell the story of those that who live selflessly and have a positive impact on those around them. The idea… and title came from the passing of a man named Frank, who lived in Foster’s hometown. Sadly, Frank passed away prior to Foster being able to interview him. The subsequent stories are dedicated to his memory.

For the fourth profile in the series, Foster and crew traveled to rural Philippines. After 30 hours in a plane, 15 hours in a car, and a hike that took an hour and a half, they arrived at the village of Kalinga. In a village situated remotely in the Luzon province, lives Apo Whang-Od. The 99-year old is considered the world’s last Mambabatok (hand-tap tattoo artist) of her generation. Despite her (estimated) age, Whang-Od passes the tattooing tradition to a new generation. This style of tattoo was considered a symbol of pride for warriors and is now a symbol of beauty for females in her tribe.

Packed along for the journey to the top of a remote mountain was the Aladdin Bi-Flex, which “proved to be an incredibly useful tool,” says Tammy Foster.
